Key Facts
  • Apple Passwords app (iOS 18+ and macOS 15+) is now the primary location for passkey management, replacing iCloud Keychain used on older Apple operating systems.
  • Deleting a passkey on one Apple device automatically removes it from all other devices sharing the same iCloud account, covering both iOS and macOS.
  • Windows 11 23H2 introduced a dedicated Passkey Delete UI under "Accounts > Passkeys" in settings, making removal simpler than on earlier Windows 11 builds.
  • Older Windows 11 versions require Chrome browser version 108+ and the built-in Password Manager to locate and delete stored passkeys.
  • Android users remove stored passkeys by navigating to Google Password Manager through Chrome browser settings and selecting the relevant site entry.

1. Where Passkeys are Stored#

For Apple users with iOS 18+ or macOS 15+, their passkeys are now saved in the new Apple Passwords app. On devices with older operating systems, they continue to be stored in the personal Apple iCloud Keychain. While Apple and Windows 11 users can remove their passkeys in the operating system settings, Windows 10 users have to search a bit. Android users can delete their passkeys via the Google Password Manager.

On iOS 18+, open the Apple Passwords app, tap "Passkeys" and search for the service whose passkey you want to remove. Select the entry, tap "Edit" and then tap "Delete" to permanently remove the passkey from your device and any other Apple devices on the same iCloud account.

Open Chrome settings, go to "Passwords and Autofill" then "Google Password Manager" and click "Settings" in the left menu. Find "Manage passkeys in your Chrome profile," locate the relevant site in the list, click the three dots and select "Delete," then confirm in the modal.

What Windows version do I need to delete passkeys directly from system settings?#

You need Windows 11, specifically the 23H2 version, to access the dedicated Passkey Delete UI under "Accounts > Passkeys" in system settings. Earlier Windows 11 builds require Chrome version 108+ and the Password Manager to delete passkeys, while Windows 10 users must follow a separate process.

Does deleting a passkey on my Mac also remove it from my iPhone?#

Yes. When you delete a passkey on any Apple device that shares the same iCloud account, the passkey is automatically removed from all other Apple devices linked to that account. This applies to both the Apple Passwords app (macOS 15+ and iOS 18+) and iCloud Keychain on older operating systems.
