# Which Payment Providers offer Passkeys?

## Which Payment Providers offer Passkeys?

Passkeys in [payment](https://www.corbado.com/passkeys-for-payment) transform how users authorize transactions
securely without passwords or OTPs. In the USA, Australia, Europe, India and Asia,
[payment](https://www.corbado.com/passkeys-for-payment) providers are embracing passkeys to reduce fraud and
enhance security. This article covers which [payment](https://www.corbado.com/passkeys-for-payment) providers
support passkeys and why passkeys are the future of online payment authentication.

Passkeys are a secure,
[passwordless authentication](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/passwordless-authentication) method based on
[FIDO2](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/fido2) and WebAuthn standards. They provide a faster and safer way for
users to access their payment accounts by replacing passwords with biometric
authentication. Some payment providers that have fully implemented passkeys include
[PayPal](https://www.corbado.com/blog/paypal-passkeys), Klarna and SumUp. Others are in various stages of
development or offering limited availability.

## Benefits of Passkeys for Payment Providers

- **Passkeys in payment prevent phishing and fraud:** Passkeys eliminate
[phishing](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/phishing) and password-related breaches, as they are
[phishing](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/phishing)-resistant and prevent attacks such as
  [credential stuffing](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/credential-stuffing) or account takeovers.
- **Better user experience in the checkout, login and sign-up process:** The quick and
simple login and sign-up process with biometrics (e.g.
[Face ID](https://www.corbado.com/faq/is-face-id-passkey), Touch ID, [Windows Hello](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/windows-hello),
[Android](https://www.corbado.com/blog/how-to-enable-passkeys-android) Biometrics) is something that users are
already familiar with. No additional app or extra hardware device needs to be purchased,
which makes things easier for the user.
- **Passkeys reduce operational costs for payment providers:** Passkeys reduce providers’
  reliance on costly SMS-based
  [2FA](https://www.corbado.com/blog/psd2-passkeys/are-passkeys-two-factor-authentication) methods or other
operational costs in the customer support or IT support team (e.g. to recover accounts
or help on password / MFA resets). Moreover, the reduction of fraud by passkeys helps to
prevent costly cases where customers might be scammed.

## Why are Payment Providers adopting Passkeys?

Payment providers are adopting passkeys to address growing cybersecurity threats and
customer demands for seamless digital experiences. Traditional authentication methods,
such as passwords and SMS OTP, are vulnerable to [phishing](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/phishing),
SIM-swapping attacks and have poor user experience. Passkeys solve these issues by
leveraging public-private key cryptography.

## Features of Passkeys for Payment Providers

- **Phishing Resistance:** Passkeys are bound to specific domains, thus preventing use on
  fraudulent sites.
- **Support across devices:** Passkeys in payment applications ensure seamless access for
users across multiple devices. Whether you’re using [Face ID](https://www.corbado.com/faq/is-face-id-passkey)
on iPhone, [Windows Hello](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/windows-hello) on a laptop, or
[Android](https://www.corbado.com/blog/how-to-enable-passkeys-android) biometrics, passkeys can sync through
  [iCloud Keychain](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/icloud-keychain) or
  [Google Password Manager](https://www.corbado.com/blog/how-to-use-google-password-manager), making online
  [payments](https://www.corbado.com/passkeys-for-payment) effortless.
- **Improved User Experience (UX):** Passkeys offer a frictionless authentication process
during payment checkout, significantly reducing transaction abandonment and increasing
  successful payment completions.

Yes. **Cashfree Payments** (India) supports biometric card authentication with **payment
passkeys** built into its card processing stack: when a cardholder enrolls for passkey
authentication, the device creates a passkey bound to the card and device (with network
standards such as [Mastercard’s](https://www.corbado.com/blog/mastercard-passkeys) program), so checkout can
complete with a biometric confirmation instead of OTP redirects. Cashfree positions the
capability as ready to enable for [merchants](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/merchant) with alignment to RBI
guidance on alternatives to SMS-based OTP and without a separate passkey-only integration
path beyond their card stack.

[merchant](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/merchant)-facing service and integrates with Razorpay’s existing card
and tokenization stack.

## Do Payment Providers support Hardware Security Keys (e.g. YubiKeys)?

Some payment platforms may support
[hardware security keys](https://www.corbado.com/blog/best-fido2-hardware-security-keys) like
[YubiKeys](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/yubikey), typically as a phishing-resistant two-factor authentication
(2FA) method alongside passwords.

**Key insights:**

- Standalone multi-factor authentication (MFA) using [YubiKeys](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/yubikey) for all
payment provider accounts is not yet universal.
- FIDO-based passwordless login (passkeys) is gaining momentum, with hardware keys often
serving as an additional security layer rather than the primary login method for
  consumers.
- As the industry moves towards passwordless [payments](https://www.corbado.com/passkeys-for-payment), passkeys
are likely to become the preferred method over physical security keys for general
consumer use due to ease of use and device compatibility.

## Passwordless Authentication in Payments

Payment providers worldwide are actively transitioning to
[passwordless authentication](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/passwordless-authentication) due to the rising
risks of phishing, social engineering attacks and credential theft. With the increasing
use of AI-powered phishing tactics, traditional passwords have become a major security
[vulnerability](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/vulnerability).

### Hybrid Phase: The Transition to Passkeys

While payment providers aim to
[eliminate passwords](https://www.corbado.com/faq/boost-passkey-enrollment-reduce-password-otp), the transition
will happen in phases:

1. Current state: A hybrid model where providers offer both password-based and
   [passwordless authentication](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/passwordless-authentication) methods, such as
   passkeys.
2. Near future: Increased adoption of payment passkeys, with passwords gradually phased
   out.
3. Long-term goal: A fully passwordless payment experience for both consumer and
   business/[merchant](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/merchant) accounts.

As more payment providers integrate passkeys, customers will expect passwordless
authentication to be the default standard. Stay ahead of the curve by adopting passkeys
for payments today!
