# Which e-commerce shops offer passkeys?

## Which e-commerce shops offer passkeys?

Passkeys in [e-commerce](https://www.corbado.com/passkeys-for-e-commerce) transform how users access shopping
accounts securely without passwords (sometimes they also replace the current existing
second factor). In the USA, Asia and Europe, the first retailers are embracing passkeys to
reduce [cart abandonment](https://www.corbado.com/blog/ecommerce-authentication) and enhance security. This
article covers which shops support passkeys and why passkeys are the future of online
shopping authentication.

Passkeys are a secure,
[passwordless authentication](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/passwordless-authentication) method based on
[FIDO2](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/fido2) and WebAuthn standards. They provide a faster and safer way for
users to access their store accounts by replacing passwords with
[biometric authentication](https://www.corbado.com/blog/passkeys-biometric-authentication) or a device-based
credential.

Some retailers and platforms that currently support passkeys include Amazon,
[eBay](https://www.corbado.com/blog/ebay-passkeys), Apple Account (used for Apple Store sign-in), Walmart, Best
Buy, Home Depot and [Uber](https://www.corbado.com/blog/uber-passkeys). These companies are leveraging passkeys
to enhance security, reduce account takeovers and improve checkout
[conversion rates](https://www.corbado.com/blog/logins-impact-checkout-conversion).

If you want more background on how modern
[e-commerce authentication](https://www.corbado.com/blog/ecommerce-authentication) is evolving (and what patterns
show up across large retailers), this breakdown goes deeper:

## Benefits of passkeys in e-commerce

- **Higher conversion through better login success rates and more account creation:**
Passkeys materially increase login success rates (fewer failed logins, fewer drop-offs)
and make it easier to get shoppers to create an account because the experience is fast
and familiar. For large retailers, even a 1% improvement in login or sign-up conversion
can translate into significant revenue impact.

Read also our detailed analysis of how the login step affects purchase completion

- **Passkeys in e-commerce prevent phishing and fraud:** Passkeys eliminate
[phishing](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/phishing) and password-related breaches, as they are
[phishing](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/phishing)-resistant and prevent attacks such as
  [credential stuffing](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/credential-stuffing) or account takeovers.

- **Better user experience in the login and checkout process:** The quick and simple login
and sign-up process with biometrics (e.g., [Face ID](https://www.corbado.com/faq/is-face-id-passkey), Touch ID,
  [Windows Hello](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/windows-hello),
[Android](https://www.corbado.com/blog/how-to-enable-passkeys-android) Biometrics) is something that users are
already familiar with. Unlike traditional authentication methods, no additional app or
extra hardware device needs to be purchased, which speeds up the path to purchase.

- **Passkeys reduce operational costs for shops:** Passkeys reduce retailers' reliance on
  costly SMS-based [2FA](https://www.corbado.com/blog/psd2-passkeys/are-passkeys-two-factor-authentication)
methods or other operational costs in the customer support or IT support team (e.g. to
  recover accounts or help on
  [password resets](https://www.corbado.com/faq/passkeys-reduce-password-resets-otp-costs)).

> - Passkeys offer a secure, passwordless way to log in using biometrics (e.g.
> [Face ID](https://www.corbado.com/faq/is-face-id-passkey), Touch ID) .
> - Leading global platforms supporting passkeys include
> [Amazon](#does-amazon-offer-passkeys), [eBay](https://www.corbado.com/blog/ebay-passkeys),
> [Apple Store](#does-apple-store-offer-passkeys)
> - Retailers from the US supporting passkeys include:
> [Target](#does-target-offer-passkeys), [Best Buy](#does-best-buy-offer-passkeys),
> [Walmart](#does-walmart-offer-passkeys), [Costco](#does-costco-ioffer-passkeys) or
> [Home Depot](#does-home-depot-offer-passkeys)
> - Asian Shops offering passkeys include: [Coupang](#does-coupang-offer-passkeys) (Taiwan
> since October 2025, Korea since April 2026)
> - In Europe, [Allegro](#does-allegro-offer-passkeys) supports passkeys for consumer

## Why are e-commerce shops adopting passkeys?

Shops are adopting passkeys to address growing cybersecurity threats and customer demands
for seamless checkout experiences. Traditional authentication methods, such as passwords
and SMS-based [2FA](https://www.corbado.com/blog/psd2-passkeys/are-passkeys-two-factor-authentication), are
vulnerable to [phishing](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/phishing), SIM-swapping attacks, and cause high
[cart abandonment](https://www.corbado.com/blog/ecommerce-authentication). Passkeys solve these issues by
leveraging [FIDO2](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/fido2) / WebAuthn standards.

## Do e-commerce shops support YubiKeys?

Some shops support [hardware security keys](https://www.corbado.com/blog/best-fido2-hardware-security-keys), such
as [YubiKeys](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/yubikey), as a phishing-resistant
[two-factor authentication](https://www.corbado.com/blog/psd2-passkeys/are-passkeys-two-factor-authentication)
(2FA) method. However, in most consumer cases, [YubiKeys](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/yubikey) are used as a
second factor in combination with passwords.

**Key insights:**

- **Amazon Web Services (AWS):** [AWS](https://www.corbado.com/blog/passkeys-amazon-cognito) supports passkeys /
security keys (FIDO2/WebAuthn) for IAM users as a strong MFA method, and
[YubiKeys](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/yubikey) can be used as compatible security keys.
- **Consumer Retail:** [Hardware security keys](https://www.corbado.com/blog/best-fido2-hardware-security-keys)
can be used as phishing-resistant MFA (and in some contexts as
  [device-bound passkeys](https://www.corbado.com/faq/are-passkeys-device-specific)), but many consumer-facing
[retail](https://www.corbado.com/passkeys-for-e-commerce) deployments prioritize synced passkeys (stored on the
phone) for convenience and recovery, while keeping passwords or one-time codes as
  fallback options.

As the industry moves towards passwordless shopping, it is likely that synced passkeys
will become the preferred method over physical security keys for consumers due to ease of
use and recovery.

## Passwordless authentication in e-commerce

Retailers worldwide are actively transitioning to passwordless authentication due to the
rising risks of account takeovers (ATO) and the need for speed.

**Hybrid Phase: The Transition to Passkeys**

While shops aim to
[eliminate passwords](https://www.corbado.com/faq/boost-passkey-enrollment-reduce-password-otp), the transition
will happen in phases:

1. **Current state:** A hybrid model where shops offer both password-based and
passwordless authentication methods, such as passkeys.
2. **Near future:** Increased adoption of checkout passkeys, with passwords gradually
phased out or demoted to a recovery option.
3. **Long-term goal:** A fully passwordless shopping experience for both consumer and
   [merchant](https://www.corbado.com/glossary/merchant) accounts.

For consumers, passkeys are the most scalable and user-friendly solution. Unlike
hardware-based security keys, passkeys:

✅ Do not require additional hardware (e.g., YubiKeys). ✅ Are built into users’ existing
devices (smartphones, laptops). ✅ Work seamlessly across platforms (iOS,
[Android](https://www.corbado.com/blog/how-to-enable-passkeys-android), Windows). ✅ Provide a fast, frictionless
checkout experience.

Given these advantages, consumer [e-commerce](https://www.corbado.com/passkeys-for-e-commerce) passwordless
authentication is expected to become the industry standard, ensuring both security and
high [conversion rates](https://www.corbado.com/blog/logins-impact-checkout-conversion).
